I just made the trek back to Boulder from opening day at A-Basin, man was it a good time. The weather was in the low 50’s, wind was calm and the crowd was stoked to be riding on the earliest opening date in 61 years. Take that, global warming!
In true opening day fashion, terrain was limited to one top to bottom trail and two park features. Coverage was great, you didn’t find any bare spots or rocks unless you went to the fringe of the trail past the warning sticks.
Folks started lining up far before the lifts started turning. The Early Riser lot was packed with skiers and riders that were anticipating their first turns of the season. We made the rounds through the parking lot and liftline and happened to bump into Seth Morrison. He was up for the morning getting stoked on the start to the 2007-2008 season and took some time to chat it up with Freeskier.TV about his massive 100+ foot double front flip, his hectic travel schedule and his high hopes for this season. We’ll be working on that video in the next couple of days and will post it up to the site.
The crowds were pretty strong through the day, probably because the snow surface and the weather were cooperating. The mood around the mountain was that of excitement, with the constant reminder of global warming, environmental concerns and other eco-awareness it is nice to see mother nature pulling it together to provide a super early opening day.
Welcome to the 2007-2008 ski season. Enjoy the photos. Video is on it’s way.
