Subaru Freeride Series kicks off from Crested Butte, CO February 12-16

The Subaru Freeride Series (SFS) kicks off its big mountain freeride tour at Crested Butte, Colorado on February 12 through February 16. The Crested Butte portion of the tour includes both a 2-star and 4-star Freeride World Qualifier, with the 4-star qualifier available for live stream via subarufreerideseries.com.

“Crested Butte is one of the founding mountains that encouraged the sport of freeskiing,” said Bryan Barlow Subaru Freeride Series event director. “As the demand and visibility of this sport continues to grow we feel it is important for spectators to embrace the history of freeride, and also have an opportunity to improve their personal skills through educational clinics and demos.”

Crested Butte has been a beneficiary of several huge snow storms in Colorado in the past few weeks, creating awesome conditions for the competition this coming weekend. Following the Crested Butte stop, the SFS continues at Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows (Feb. 19-23), Telluride (Mar. 20-23), and Big Sky (Apr. 2-7).

The first of four Subaru Freeride Series (SFS) big mountain freeride competition stops will kick off February 12-16 in Crested Butte, Colo. For the first time, competitions will include adult snowboarding in addition to traditional freeride skiing events. Junior Freeride Tour competitions for athletes age 12-18 will also take place at the SFS stops. The resort received more than 30 inches of new snow Jan. 30-Feb. 1 creating excellent conditions. More snow in the forecast is sure to please both competitors and spectators alike.

The Subaru Freeride Series is North America’s premier level Freeride World Qualifier (FWQ) providing four competition stops for freeride skiers and snowboarders. The first stop at Crested Butte Mountain Resort will feature a 2-star and a 4-star Freeride World Qualifier competition. The 4-star finals on Sat. Feb. 15 will be webcast live on subarufreerideseries.com.

Each Subaru Freeride Series event will take place as part of the Subaru Winter Fest, a weekend event focused on educating snow enthusiasts of all abilities about the sport and evolution of freeride through unique exhibits and activities. Entertainment also includes a special performance of DJ Logic and Late Night Radio 7PM on Feb. 15 at The Lodge at Mountain Square. Tickets are $10 at the door.

The series will provide athletes the opportunity to earn valuable Freeride World Qualifier points in pursuit of advancing to the 2015 Freeride World Tour. In addition to podium awards, one skier and snowboarder at each event will be selected as the recipients of the Backcountry.com Sick Bird award. This award is highly coveted by the big mountain freeride community and is granted to riders who challenge not only themselves but also the sport through their athletic performance.
