Monolith Festival set to take over Red Rocks

I was bored one day a couple months ago, googling artists I wanted to see play live, checking if they were coming to Colorado this summer. When I got to Justice, the duo who put out one of the best electronic albums (Cross) since Cyrstal Method’s Vegas, I learned they were playing at Red Rocks.

Justice at Red Rocks?! “Holy crap,” I though. “How’s that for perfect?”

I dug a little deeper and discovered that not only was Justice coming, but about sixty other bands were, too. Sixty bands at Red Rocks in two days?! What the hell? That’s not even possible.

Enter Monolith Festival, taking Red Rocks by storm this coming weekend, September 13 & 14.

This UK-in-the-summer-worthy festival is bringing bands into Colorado from all over the world. Highlights for me include The Presets, Tilly and the Wall, TV on the Radio, CSS, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Does it Offend You, Yeah?.

If you’ve never been to a show at Red Rocks, you’re in for a treat. The venue is world-famous (many artists have recorded live CDs there… you may remember Dave Matthews, Live at Red Rocks?). It’s a semi-natural amphitheater, with massive red rocks towering on either side of the stands, which are carved into the rock (and poured over with concrete.. awww). Just in the last year, I’ve seen Nine Inch Nails, Bob Dylan and Daft Punk blow the place up. Trent Reznor commented during his show there a couple weeks ago: “This is one of my favorite places to play. Usually when we play, the crowd is just a blur. Here, I can see each and every one of you. I’m really intimidated.” Red Rocks creates a vibe that no other venue could possibly replicate, with maybe the exception of the Pompeii Coliseum.

Freeskier will be at Red Rocks all weekend, while we wait for the snow to start flying in the mountains, bringing you coverage of this epic event, taking place right in our backyards.
