Midland, Ontario renames street in honor of Sarah Burke

Sarah Burke’s childhood home of Midland, Ontario has renamed a street in her honor. What was once known as Huron Street is now Sarah Burke Way, the street sign complete with a silhouette of an airborne skier. The naming of the street came as a surprise to the Burke family. Nearly fifty people attended a special unveiling on Thursday afternoon, including family, friends and Midland Mayor Gordon McKay who spoke about the significance of the new street name, and paid tribute to Sarah.

Sarah’s father Gord told the Barrie Examiner, “It honors Sarah so much. It makes me think of my neighbors, of the kindness of them, how they’ve helped out so much.” Two of Sarah’s neighbors were the ones who originally came up with the idea. Just days following Sarah’s passing, a petition was started by Debbie and Rick Dalziel to have the street name changed. The Examiner reports the petition was signed unanimously by the members of the neighborhood.
