If you live in Colorado and haven’t been to any of Loveland’s Vert Alert’s you are missing out… BIGTIME. Let me break it down for you. Twice a year, Loveland has their Vert Alert competition. It is a slopestyle and rail jam that takes place in the Love Park, high on the continental divide. To top it all off, the days festivities are sponsored by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, who graciously provide a mountain of freshly made chicken and fish tacos for everyone participating in the event. If that isn’t enough, there is a tidal wave of beverages like Mountain Dew and Pepsi to keep your caffeine buzz going for the whole day. Entry to a competition, a tshirt and lunch for only $20. THAT IS A DEAL!
Enough about the scene, everyone is here for the competition! At around 11 AM, skiers and riders congregate at the top of the Love Park and start sessioning the slopestyle course in anticipation of the main event. The atmosphere at this event is very laid back, there isn’t any unnecessary attitude. Skiers and riders are called in a mixed format and it’s fusion at its finest. While the jumps aren’t the largest in the business they certainly do the trick with skiers throwing rodeo 5’s, cork 7’s and the occasional backflip.
Winners are awarded with a multitude of prizes. Age division champs get new skis while runners up get jackets, pants, goggles gloves and a slew of other prizes that Loveland is insanely gracious in providing. The groms are even awarded with prizes for their efforts! Everyone goes home a winner!
After the last of the prizes and schwag are given away, dozens of participants stick around for some post competition beverages and go over the highlights and photos from the day. There really isn’t any other amateur event in the business that can match the atmosphere, prizes and stoke that the Vert Alert provides. If you didn’t have the chance to make it to either of the competitions this season we have some good news for you… Loveland is blowing the doors off the season this weekend with the arrival of the Smith Limo. Come up to Loveland this weekend and session this infamous element in the Love Park ABSOLUTELY FREE. That’s right, show up, sign the waiver and session one of the most unique elements in the business. We’ll be there, giving out more schwag and shooting for Freeskier.TV.
Check out this video we made last season when the Smith Limo visited Loveland. This should give you a good idea of what you can expect this Sunday!
