Canon Powershot G12

If you’re like many photography enthusiasts who also like to ski, you lie in somewhat of a gray area. You really enjoy capturing quality images but also like the freedom of not having to tote around a DSLR and a bulky camera bag. If this sounds familiar then you might want to check out the G12 from Canon. This camera combines the size of a point-and-shoot digital camera with the essential functionalities and RAW files of a full-size DSLR.

Dials on top of the camera allow you to select from a range of different modes and adjust ISO (up to 3200), shutter speed, and aperture, which ranges from f/2.8-4.5. You can also adjust the exposure compensation and the optical zoom with a range of 28-140mm.

The video capabilities are respectable, with 320×240 and 640×480 @ 30 fps as well as 1280×720 @ 24 fps. On the back you’ll find a 2.8” swivel screen that can be used for live viewing or playback of photos and videos as well as multiple on screen menus. A hot shoe allows you to attach an external flash and there is an available tele converter lens but both of these detract somewhat from the convenience of the compact camera.

For advanced-amateur photographers on the go, the rugged G12 offers performance and convenience at a fair price and is a favorite of the Freeskier staff.
