Local Athletes Win Big at New Year’s Eve Rockin’ Rail Jam

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Team took home wins in four of eight divisions at last week’s New Year’s Eve Rockin’ Rail Jam, the team’s first event of the season.

The 5th Annual Rail Jam took place on terrain park features, including rails and boxes, which were specially set up on the slopes above Ed & Mully’s Lounge for the event. A record sixty-five registered contestants did their best to impress judges with style and skill in two half-hour jam sessions; one each for snowboarders and skiers.

Each discipline was split into four divisions: Women’s Amateur, Boys’ Amateur, Men’s Amateur and and Open class.

The Whitefish Mountain Resort Freestyle Team, coming off of an intensive four-day Holiday Training Camp, produced four first-place finishes: Marley Rodwick (Women’s Ski AM), Ryan Heaverland (Men’s Snowboard AM), Parkin Costain (Boys Ski AM), and Braedon Ortt (Boys Snowboard AM).

Other winners were Irie Anderson (Men’s Ski AM), Alex Adams (Ski OPEN), Denise Allison (Women’s Snowboard AM), and Todd Williamson (Snowboard OPEN).

The night’s winners took home great prizes and cash purses made possible in part by the event’s sponsors: Rossignol, Giro, Freeskier Magazine, Snowboard Magazine, Smith, Dakine, Stumptown Snowboards, Midway Rentals, Coca-Cola, Red Caboose Diner, Rejuvenate Massage and Bodyworks, Sportsman & Ski Haus, Wrap ‘N Roll Café, Second Street Pizza, Montana Coffee Traders, and Great Northern Brewing.

After the Rail Jam, an on-snow torchlight parade and fireworks display entertained close to 1000 spectators who attended the night’s festivities.

The Whitefish Mountain Resort Freestyle Team’s next local showing will be at the first event in the Night Riders Park Series: a double feature on Saturday, Jan. 29 which will include a rail jam and a slopestyle competition.
