The countdown is on to the first ever Downtown Showdown, as Sunday River and Sugarloaf USA host a urban rail jam in Portland Maine Feb 14. 16 skiers and 16 riders will tackle this urban rail park which will feature a two-story run-in, a custom-built thirty-foot three-rail staircase, as well as an overturned lobster boat hull for sliding. This invitation only event is going to be the largest of its kind ever in Maine. Over $5,000 in cash and prizes are on the line for the 32 invited competitors who come from ski academies, industry teams and winners of special qualifiers held at Sunday River. Loon and Sugarloaf.

Already hundreds of man-hours have gone into this project, including the event’s centerpiece staircase says Sunday River’s terrain parks manager Nick Roma, “The staircase itself is almost 100 pieces, which we have to construct first, then take it apart, get it to Portland and put it all back together.” Event sponsors include Red Bull, Oakley, Burton, Freeskier and Snowboard Magazines.

The event is free to the public and is on Saturday February 14th at 4pm. For more information visit…
