Cycle for a Cause to Benefit Ski Charities

Throughout October professional freeskiing legends plan to ride along the Pacific Coast to raise money for fallen and injured athletes in the freeskiing community.

The ‘Cycle For A Cause’ bike ride kicks off on October 3, in Seattle; WA. Riders will cover 40-80 miles a day down the West Coast until the group reaches San Diego.

Max Kuszaj, the brainchild behind the charity bike ride, felt that it was time to give back to the industry that he loves.

“Losing two friends to skiing, and then having a friend have a life-changing injury, really made me take a step back and realize what we do and what a tight knit community we have with skiing.”

Over the last few years the ski industry has lost a few high-profile friend and athletes. Shane McConkey passed away this past winter in a Ski BASE accident in Italy. Utah legend Billy Poole was killed in a ski accident in Utah and Riley Poor sustained a paralyzing spinal cord injury last season in Vermont.

‘Cycle For A Cause,’ has attracted the likes of many ski industry athletes including Pep Fujas, Sherry McConkey, Peter Olenick, Simon Dumont, JT Holmes and many others. But it’s not just skiers who are participating; the event is open to anyone who has a bike. In fact many riders who can’t make the 1,200 mile journey are opting to join up in Southern California for a few sections to show their support.

After speaking with his friends Julian Carr and Cody Barnhill, Kuszaj decided to honor Billy, Shane and Riley in a way he knew they’d want: by getting out to celebrate their lives. The ride will benefit the Billy Poole Ski Foundation, the Shane McConkey Fund and the NTAF Spinal Cord Injury Fund in honor of Riley Poor.
