Zeal has come a long way in the last couple of years. In addition to high-quality sunglasses, the company produces an impressive line of goggles and the iON is no exception. The POV camera goggle pushes the envelope in terms of what you can expect from a goggle while eliminating the need for the awkward-looking helmet mount.
The 170-degree camera lens is mounted front and center, at the top of the frame. Inside the goggle, on the bottom right is a small viewfinder and though it does take a small chunk out of your lower peripheral vision, the designers did a good job of keeping it minimal, yet useful. Four buttons on the right side of the frame allow you to power on/off and scroll through all your options without taking off your gloves.
On the right side of the frame you’ll find a slot for a Micro SD card as well as a mini USB port for charging. The camera shoots 1080px720p HD video in addition to 8mp still photos and the built-in lithium-ion battery will give you about three hours of runtime on a full charge.
The lens pops in and out pretty easily and the adjustable strap is lined with silicone to keep it from slipping off your head. If there were one complaint about the goggle it would be that it feels a little bulky but it’s not a bad trade for ditching the helmet cam and you can be sure that other goggle companies will soon follow suit.
